Where can I buy CO2? A buyer's guide

Where can I buy CO2 is the question behind a lot of first calls, and the honest answer depends on how much you use and what for. Here is where to buy carbon dioxide for a commercial account, what small buyers should do instead, and how to tell the difference before you spend anything.

Where do you get CO2 for a business?

Commercial CO2 comes from a gas supplier, not a store. A supplier either delivers bottled CO2 in cylinders on a route and takes your empties, or installs a bulk storage system in your building and fills it from outside. Green CO2 Systems does both across Denver, Fort Collins, Colorado Springs, Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Las Vegas.

The grade matters as much as the source. Anything that ends up in a drink needs beverage-grade CO2, which is certified for food and drink contact. Industrial-grade gas is not, and it can carry compounds that alter taste.

Where can you buy CO2, by how much you use

The right answer changes with volume. These are the four situations we see, and what each one should do.

A few cylinders a month

Cylinder exchange on a route. We bring full bottles and take your empties, so nobody drives anywhere. This covers most small bars, single fountain setups and small grow rooms.

Several cylinders a week

You are at the line where a permanent bulk system costs less to run. Storage stays in your building, deliveries happen from outside, and handling disappears. The free assessment tells you which side of the line you are on.

A brewery, multi-room grow or multi-site group

Bulk with telemetry, sized on peak draw rather than average use, usually with blended gas or nitrogen on the same account.

A hobbyist or a one-off need

A homebrew or paintball fill is not what a commercial route is built for. A local homebrew shop or welding supply store with a CO2 filling station near you is the better fit, and we will say so if you call.

Cylinder exchange: what a CO2 purchase actually looks like

Exchange is the default for commercial accounts. Full cylinders arrive on schedule, empties leave, and the test dates on the bottles are our problem to track. We only fill our own cylinders, which is what keeps the swap instant: nobody waits weeks for a specific bottle to come back.

Either way, a CO2 purchase from a route supplier is a standing arrangement, not a trip. Nobody on your team plans their week around a gas run or searches for a CO2 filling station near me on a Sunday.

  • Beverage-grade gas certified for food and drink use
  • Cylinder sizes matched to your dispensing setup
  • Scheduled route built from your measured consumption
  • Test dates tracked so a bottle never expires in service

Where to buy carbon dioxide in bulk

Micro Bulk CO2 is bought the same way, from a supplier, but the equipment changes the economics. A conventional low-pressure bulk tank vents gas as it warms, and on a quiet site that loss can be approximately 30 percent or more of a delivery. Our high-pressure system stays fully enclosed, so you get the benefit of what you pay for.

Bulk is not automatically right for everyone. Low-volume sites are better served by cylinders until their consumption justifies the install, and the assessment will tell you that plainly.

What to ask before you buy

Five questions separate a supplier from a shop with opening hours. Ask them of anyone, including us.

  1. 1

Is the gas beverage grade, and can you show the certification?

Anything in a drink needs it. A supplier who finds that a difficult question is telling you something.

  2. 2

Where does the nearest stock physically sit?

Gas is heavy and urgent when it runs out. A regional warehouse four hours away is not a local supplier, whatever the listing says.

  3. 3

Who answers after hours, and what does it cost?

Get the answer in writing. Ours: existing customers reach an on-call service technician, and an emergency delivery fee applies to after-hours call-outs, which is why we build schedules that make those calls rare.

  4. 4

    Who tracks cylinder test dates?

An out-of-date bottle cannot legally be filled. On our stock, we track it. On yours, ask who does.

  5. 5

Will you tell me if I do not need bulk?

A supplier who sells everyone the largest thing in the catalog gets one good year and a churn problem. We would rather keep you.

Common questions

From a beverage gas supplier that delivers on a route. In Denver, Fort Collins, Colorado Springs, Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Las Vegas that is us: call 877-CO2-FOR-U and a Territory Sales Manager will set up a schedule from your usage.

Our routes are built for standing commercial accounts. If you need one bottle for a home or hobby setup, a homebrew or welding supply shop with a filling station is usually the better fit, and we will point you to one.

Same gas, different container. Bottled CO2 comes in cylinders, which we supply by exchange. Micro Bulk CO2 lives in a permanent system in your building that we fill from outside. Volume decides which one you should buy.

If the gas touches anything a customer drinks, beverage grade. For pool pH control or industrial use, tell us the application and we will confirm.
